Side Effects of Smoking

A cigarette is a small roll of finely cut tobacco leaves wrapped in a cylinder of thin paper for smoking. Smoking is responsible for almost 9 out of 10 lung cancer deaths. Using tobacco can damage a woman's reproductive health and hurt babies. There are approximately 4000 chemicals in cigarettes, hundreds of which are toxic. Tobacco is a source of carcinogen that causes cancer, including cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx (voice box), mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, pancreas, stomach, and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.

Smoking can make pneumonia and asthma worse. It has been linked to other health problems, too, including gum disease, cataracts, bone thinning, hip fractures, and peptic ulcers. Cigarette smoking and exposure to tobacco smoke cause more than 440,000 premature deaths each year in the United States. Smokers can substantially reduce their risk of disease, including cancer, by quitting smoking.

All forms of tobacco are harmful and addictive:
  • Cigars
  • Smokeless Tobacco
  • Pipes
  • Hookahs or Waterpipe
  • Bidis
  • Kreteks
There is no safe tobacco product. All tobacco products are harmful and cause cancer.
